Are we Independent yet!!

A very Happy Independence Day to everyone on either side of the border. In the 64th year of independence how free are we? I mean, I don’t want to get into the political and literal aspects of freedom and the connotations it spurs in our minds, I am talking of something more deep. I am talking about the relevance of Independence in our lives.

Since 1947 we have fought just 3 wars, the latest being in ’99 at Kargill. So does that mean we have been free ever since? Or let me just take my case in particular, I was born in ’85 so I missed the first two wars, also I read somewhere that almost more than 50% of Indian population is in its 20s so that means they also missed the wars. And most of us during the wartime were not directly related to the war like it used to be in the old days of ‘mutiny’ and ‘Satyagriha’. Now I ponder on the question again ‘ If we are not fighting any war, how relevant is the Independence to us?’

For me in particular, I feel that we are fighting a more severe battle; without any condescension to our martyrs; because in our case the enemy lies within us, there are no boundaries and no guns in this war. The war that most of us wage is between our hearts and our minds. Most of us are born with some talent and most of us have dreams. But as we grow older, ‘reality’ start to dawn on us. We realize along the way that being an astronaut or a cricketer is not possible, being a singer or a painter sounds absurd and it seems more sensible to pursue ‘safer’ options, obviously because we cannot feed our families or satiate the expectations of the society by following the heart. Right?

Practical and sensible makes more sense and seems safer. Thus starts a war which we all wage daily, day in and day out. Some people fight it when they look themselves in the mirror first thing in the morning, some people fight it tossing and turning sleeplessly in their beds and some, when they see some daring warriors win their fights.

For me right now, I fight it day in and day out and console myself by considering it as a prelude to the good fight. Till the day I win my own independence, I will not be able to celebrate and appreciate the happiness independence brings in one’s life. And for you, who is reading this, I wish that you too win your war for independence soon.

  1. Happy Independence Day!!!
I want to start by giving the reason, whether u want it or not, for current celebrations… It is that we r no longer under any foreign rule…that is its our own ppl selected by us n r working for our own welfare…
In my view we have different types of relevant independence’s:
Independence, of our dear earth, from aliens (fictional)…from another country… from our own nation (law politics bureaucracy)…from society/casts/fraternity…from family…from individual…from our MIND…Every level is as complex as the other…n each type affect our lives at all times..
Now the kind of independence u r talking about, as i see, is of the last level…(which is most difficult to achieve or may be is hypothetical)…i think they call it the awakening or nirvana…and it comes after relieving urself with all the bondages attached, by birth, with the human kind…as far as i know the real answer to the total independence can be found in our rich spiritual scriptures n past…but i dont think we r old enough to push ourselves into the MESS, as the majority of our generation see it today…
So leaving that aside the best thing we can do with a life span is to live it Normally..
For us normal/sane being, a definitive path has to be followed…wiz, make career, marry, have kids, nourish them…Atleast this much has to be done…But no time is left, to get the feeling of being independent, by the time u r done with the responsibilities…
Or alternatively, u don’t do anything. And dare every law, society, family… but then u ll have to fight against all these terms…Or u can confine urself in a room and do whatever u want to do, but then again u will be fighting urself n the four walls…
My point is, U have to fight… all the time…reasons changes from time to time (may be in seconds)…even if u r an agnostic of the highest degree and u feel that everything is trivial, then too one either becomes a rebel/radical or he fight for peoples good (commits suicide if insane)…so, such selfless (read free souls) ppl fights too, in a way…
So Independence, in my thinking, remains a subjective term and the fact remains as such, And the crux would be: “To human is to fight”…you have to fight, continuously, for upliftment, betterment, obligation, justice, survival…almost anything …
    Your views…

P.S. Found time to write this much coz I m feeling Independent 🙂

  2. One’s state of mind reflect his ideas. Satya’s simply reflect the entrepreneurial ambitions fighting within him, desperately trying to free it self. Satya, things are simple if you want them to be, and they are as complex as painted by Thakur, if you want them to be.
Ultimately, everything boils down to, what you do to get what you want.!! So focus on action, and have patience. Your time shall come!! 🙂

  3. Nice one Satya!! I too share a similar view as yours on independence. As they say, happiness is a state of mind and so is freedom. And till the day we start doing what we are actually born to do, we can’t be free!!
